Pregnant Belly

Understanding Pregnancy and the Body

Pregnancy brings profound changes to a woman's body, including laxity in ligaments, altered posture, and a change to your centre of gravity.

These changes can increase pressure on the vertebrae, causing adaptation to muscles and ligaments, often leading to discomfort and pain.

  • How can osteopathy help during pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a very individual experience, and as Osteopaths we understand the extreme physical, chemical and emotional changes that occur during a this short period of time. Your body has to adapt to carrying on average an extra 12.5 kg of baby, placenta and waters. This places a lot of stress on multiple tissues, such as organs, joints, muscles and bone. Osteopathy can help you through the changes associated with the new demands of your body during pregnancy in many different ways!

  • What makes prenatal massage different from regular massage?

Pregnancy is tough, especially getting nearer to childbirth, where sudden baby growth increases and as such, greater weight puts increased pressure on your body. Feeling sore and achy becomes your new norm as your posture adapts to compensate for the changes in your center of gravity. As a result, Musculature, tendons and ligaments become unaccustomedly trained.

A prenatal massage focuses on the condition of the patient in terms of what stage of pregnancy you as the expectant mother are in. As a result, m
any of the conventional massage techniques become non-appropriate. The roots of Prenatal massage can be traced back over 3000 years, and to this day it can still be a superb way to support your musculoskeletal health during your pregnant period.

Due to expectant mothers inability to lie on their abdomen at any stage of pregnancy, treatments take place side lying or on the patients back, depending on what is comfortable for you as the patient. Our expert Massage therapists use bolster Cushions a to support the body throughout treatment.

The Swedish massage technique is predominantly used during prenatal massage. This focuses on long, sweeping strokes with very minimal pressure.
